In 2007, Rio Tinto Alcan purchased the corporation of Kitamaat Valley Institute Corporation (KVIC) from McNab Morris Developments. The idea was first entertained under Rio Tinto Alcan’s newly formed Regional Economic Development Department as a way to help Haisla members face the challenge of upgrading their education to become job ready and fit for employment for criteria related to smelter operations. This notion was discussed with Haisla Nation leadership at the time as prelude and evidence of the company’s intent and sincerity to begin negotiations of the Haisla Nation Legacy Agreement with Rio Tinto. The purchase of KVIC was subsequently made fully by Rio Tinto and equal shares in the corporation were gifted to the Haisla Nation. It was always Rio Tinto Alcan’s view to help support the Haisla Nation in their education and training journey. In fact, it was entrenched as an obligation by Rio Tinto Alcan as part of the Legacy Agreement. In 2010, KVIC was turned into a not-for-profit society which was renamed Kitamaat Valley Education Society. Most recently, we became an Indigenous Non-Profit Society.
